In the past, an climbing or caving instructor, a high- or mid-mountain guide, or an alpinist could become a canyoning instructor. Since 2010, three specific diplomas allow one to practice this profession, the most notable being the DEJEPS “Canyoning” (State Diploma of Youth, Popular Education, and Sport).

Canyoning requires practical experience to master—much like learning a language! The diploma is time-sensitive and must be renewed every 6 years. Safety is the top priority in canyoning.

Above all, canyoning is about passion and sharing the experience with the group; it is an act of generosity.

Can you become a competitive canyoning athlete?

Canyoning and competition are incompatible concepts! It is a nature-based sport where the goal is not to outperform others but to enjoy a natural and thrilling experience safely. So yes, one can be a “champion” of canyoning—but only in a figurative sense!
