Every good practitioner of this outdoor sport—via ferrata—must equip themselves with specific, high-quality gear:
Good mountain shoes: Ideally, shoes with solid soles that allow you to step on rungs without pain, and with non-slip soles to avoid slipping.
Helmet: The helmet is absolutely ESSENTIAL in via ferrata. Rockfalls are possible, and it’s better to receive a stone on your helmet than on your head… Moreover, in case of a fall, the helmet, as in many other activities, will protect you. For it to be effective, it must be properly adjusted.
Harness: The harness must be adjustable at both the thighs and waist. It’s crucial to tighten it properly in order to be fully protected. ⚠️ Note: full-body harnesses should be avoided, as they increase the risk of injury by making falls more painful.
Gloves: Climbing or cycling gloves provide extra comfort when practicing via ferrata. They help prevent unpleasant friction on the hands from cables or rock.
Lanyards (via ferrata set): Via ferrata lanyards consist of two carabiners connected in a Y-shape, ensuring you are never unattached from the lifeline. While older lanyards included a metal braking device to absorb a fall, modern ones use an energy-absorbing pouch. This pouch also shows whether the lanyard has already taken a fall—if so, it should no longer be used.
Additional group equipment:
Rope: Useful for securing the entire group; particularly important for beginners.
Backpack: Should contain at least a water bottle and a first aid kit.
