How to Drive a Dog Sled?
Driving a dog sled is not something you can improvise!
It requires real effort. The musher must be present both physically and mentally—he is the one who motivates and supports the dogs. Certain technical skills must be mastered. For example, to brake, the musher stands on one leg while pressing the brake with the other. The whole lower body is engaged. But that’s not all! You also need to work with your center of gravity, especially when turning: the body leans toward the intended direction.
On climbs, a true musher will help his dogs by pushing with his feet—making it a real test of endurance.
Communication
is just as essential: the dogs must be able to understand and react to the musher’s voice alone. A specific code of commands is established, and this requires a real relationship of trust and affection between musher and dogs.
Safety First
The main risk in dog sledding is falling
… But don’t worry—since you fall into snow, there’s very little risk of injury. It’s a fairly safe activity, provided the equipment is well chosen and adapted to the environment. So, for those who want to live an incredible adventure without taking risks—this is the right activity!
With our dog sled driving initiation or training courses, you’ll discover the whole process, guided by the expert advice of our passionate mushers.
