Driving a dog sled is not something you can improvise! It requires real effort. The musher must be present both physically and mentally—he is the one who motivates and supports the dogs. Certain technical skills must be mastered. For example, to brake, the musher stands on one leg while pressing the brake with the other. The whole lower body is engaged. But that’s not all! You also need to work with your center of gravity, especially when turning: the body leans toward the intended direction.

On climbs, a true musher will help his dogs by pushing with his feet—making it a real test of endurance.

Communication is just as essential: the dogs must be able to understand and react to the musher’s voice alone. A specific code of commands is established, and this requires a real relationship of trust and affection between musher and dogs.
