Like any sport, canyoning requires specific equipment. The development of modern gear has allowed the discipline to grow and become more accessible. Originally, the first canyon explorers used simple hemp ropes and wooden logs for seating to descend into canyons.
Modern canyoning equipment has made canyon access much easier. Safety is crucial in this activity, so it is very important to follow all applicable standards.
Essential personal equipment includes:
Wetsuit (Neoprene suit): Canyon water is often quite cold. A wetsuit protects against both the water temperature and the rough canyon terrain. Many canyons are narrow and shaded, with little sunlight, and water often remains cold. In aquatic slides and other movements, a neoprene suit provides comfort and protection.
Helmet: Protects the head from potential impacts with rocks or obstacles while sliding, jumping, rappelling, or climbing.
Shoes / socks: You never know where your feet will land while canyoning. Between flowing water, rolling rocks, and various obstacles, sturdy footwear is essential. Non-slip soles are highly recommended to prevent slipping on wet surfaces. Neoprene socks or shoes help keep feet warm in cold water.
Harness: Essential for sections requiring rappelling. The harness allows you to sit securely while attached to a rope anchored at a fixed point. Canyoning harnesses are similar to climbing harnesses but often come with ropes designed to withstand canyon conditions.
Lanyards and descender: Attached to the harness, these provide additional safety, allowing secure attachment to ropes, carabiners, and other equipment.
Collective equipment, usually carried by guides, includes:
Ropes and progression gear (carabiners, quickdraws, descenders)
Safety and rescue equipment (backup rope, rope ascent tools, first aid kit, headlamp, whistle, knife, etc.)
For extra comfort, participants may use perforated backpacks for water drainage or waterproof bags to protect their belongings. Additional accessories, such as gloves or technical thermal clothing, are also appreciated to enhance the canyoning experience.
