Becoming a mountain bike instructor is not something you can improvise! In France, there are two main paths: a university route or a state-certified diploma. The first is more theoretical, while the second focuses on practical skills. In fact, the state diploma is often more recognized than a university degree in the MTB community.

The STAPS degree (Sciences and Techniques of Physical and Sports Activities) – equivalent to the BPJEPS in terms of qualification level – allows graduates to supervise sporting activities.

State diplomas are organized by levels of expertise:

  • BAPAAT (Professional Aptitude Certificate for Assistant Animator/Technician) with a specialization in Outdoor Recreation. However, this diploma is not recommended for becoming an MTB instructor, as it does not allow one to lead MTB activities independently.

  • BPJEPS (Professional Certificate of Youth, Popular Education, and Sport) with specializations such as Sports Educator, Cycling Activities, or Physical Activities for All. This diploma is the most suitable for aspiring MTB instructors. It is a level 4 diploma, allowing holders to supervise recreational activities. Coaching professional cyclists typically requires higher-level diplomas.

  • DEJEPS (State Diploma of Youth, Popular Education, and Sport) with a specialization in MTB. This diploma allows professionals to supervise riders of all levels, from beginners to advanced athletes.
